These are the 7 Most Popular esports Games

There are countless esports games that inspire people all over the world. But which are the most popular esports games worldwide? We'll not only introduce you to the seven games that rule the international esports community, but also reveal exciting facts about them.

First Up: The Genres

Before we get started, we'll take a look at what the more popular genres mean.

  • Real-Time Strategy: In real time strategy games, players usually cannot develop a strategy or tactic beforehand, but must take the right measures at the right time in the right place to win the fight. This type of game requires tactical skill, strategic foresight, multi-tasking, quick reactions and the ability to stay on top of chaotic situations.
  • Esports, which formally implies electronic sports, is one of the most sweltering mainstream societies around the world. Boxing and other fighting sports have been popular in the world of traditional sports since ancient times, and in the world of gaming, fighting games have also always been massively popular. So, it should come as no surprise to learn that fighting is one of the most popular present-day esports around. The 7 Most Popular esports Games We present the seven most popular esports games worldwide. A game's popularity can be tracked based on the number of professional players for a particular game. Esportsearnings.com provides a comprehensive overview of the number of professional players per game.

  • First-Person Shooters: First person shooters focus on simulating a firefight from a first person perspetive and may be either individual or team based. The player gets the impression that he is actually involved in the action, making the game experience more real and immediate.
  • MOBA: Multiplayer Online Battle Arean (MOBA) games are a spin-off of real-time strategy games. They combine elements of action, role-playing and strategy. MOBAs are typically team focused where two teams square off with each player having a specific role or class in the form of a hero. Throughout the game, you collect experience points and become stronger. The goal is to destroy the base of the opposing team.
  • Online Trading Card Game: These games combine strategic skill with the task of collecting cards. It is important for the players to continuously expand their decks. Certain cards are quite common while more powerful cards are rarer and harder to come by. Online Trading Card games are usually less about fulfilling a mission. Rather, the games thrive on competing again and again against an opponent and defeating him with their own, individually created deck.
  • Battle Royale: This Hunger Games style genre is all about survival. The players must remain in a given zone while the map shrinks over the duration of the match. If you're the last one standing, congratulations! The principle of the game is derived from a Japanese novel of the same name (1999) and the corresponding feature film (2000).

From realistic Formula 1 simulations to dirty rallycross – the top esports racing games explained.Photo credit: F1 2020 / iRacing Twitter
Unlike most esports genres, there is not one single esports racing game in which most players compete. Instead, there is a variety of different titles which all have their own tournaments and communities. Some games focus on racing series such as Formula 1, others on motorcycles and still others are far from simulations and send you into crazy futuristic settings. The amount of titles can be overwhelming, so we prepared an overview of the most important games in esports racing.
Esports racing games can be sorted in different categories, the most important ones being simulation and simcade titles. Simulations aim to convey the physics and feelings of real-life cars and circuits as realistically as possible. Simcades are not quite fully-fledged sims, but neither can they be considered arcade racers like Mario Kart, which have nothing to do with reality at all. They are designed in real-life settings and include mechanics such as tire wear or weight distribution, but their impact is not as heavy and close to reality as in simulations. If you want to learn more about the categories, you can check out our article on the different genres.

    DiRT Rally 2.0

    Publisher: Codemasters
Platform: Windows, Xbox One, PlayStation 4
    Genre: Simcade
From a highly polished simulation straight into a dirty action game: DiRT Rally 2.0 focuses on rallying and rallycross. The game's ambition is to deliver a realistic off-road experience with life-like physics. It features locations in New Zealand, Argentina, Spain, Poland, Australia and the USA. And while the tracks are set in muddy paths and are often even dimmed more by its impactful weather changes, the game still manages to portray aesthetic visuals.
DiRT Rally 2.0 also has a 'My Team' mode and a tuning feature, in which the set-ups of all cars and individual parts can be adjusted. The Freeplay part of the game features a Historic mode, Time Trial as well as the FIA World Rallycross Championship. DiRT's cars range from a historical Lancia Stratos to a brand new R5 Volkswagen Polo.

    F1 2020

    Publisher: Codemasters
Platform: Windows, Xbox One, PlayStation 4
    Genre: Simcade
The new Formula 1 2020 game was released in June. As the name already suggests, it is all about the current season of Formula 1 and Formula 2 series. Players can race on the laser-scanned circuits that the real racers are competing on. The famous F1 teams and drivers are part of the game as well, of course. The special 2020 Schumacher edition honors German legend Michael Schumacher and comes with four cars the icon raced in, as well as historical F1 content as DLC.
Apart from the classic Time Trial, Multiplayer, Quick Race and Career Mode, the game also offers a fantastic My Team mode in which you build and manage your own team, starting with F2 drivers. The rookies can be developed to be even faster than the F1 allstars, but you can also follow the career of an already established driver like Lando Norris or Sebastian Vettel.
Since F1 2020 is not a fully-fledged simulator but a simcade title, it is quite suitable for new racing fans. The game supports newbies with assistance features, but it can still be played on a highly competitive level.
