Manufacturer of fire protection systems made in Germany
Farbenfabrikant 1917
Rudolf Hensel GmbH was founded in 1922 as a varnish and paint factory and its company headquarters remained at Süderstraße 235 in Hamburg until 2001. In the beginning, its product range consisted mainly of special marine paints. In the 1950s, this range enabled the company to establish itself as a market leader – in Scandinavia as well. On the lookout for new challenges, Hensel recognised the increasing importance of passive structural fire protection at this early stage and began to devote its development activities to fire-protection coatings. This competence was acknowledged in Germany as early as 1953 with the company’s first patents. National and international certifications followed.
In 1998, the company site was expanded to incorporate the neighbouring plot of land. In 2001, the ever-growing global demand for Hensel’s products made it necessary for the company to relocate to new production facilities. Today, the company home of Rudolf Hensel GmbH is in Börnsen – on the outskirts of the Hanseatic city of Hamburg – and occupies an area of 20,000 square metres. In addition to its headquarters, the site houses a pilot plant and production shops with state of the art facilities.
The fire-protection systems comprising the HENSOTHERM® and HENSOMASTIK® product lines are safety products. They protect human life, safeguard assets and harmonise technical safety and architectural aspects. Hensel coating systems are approved by building authorities in accordance with DIN 4102 and EN 13501 and have further international certificates, including BS 476, VKF, UL 263 and GOST.
Farbenfabriken Bayer Aktiengesellschaft
The broad range of products manufactured by Rudolf Hensel GmbH spans certified intumescent and ablative coatings to protect steel, wood, concrete and cables from fire, and to produce wall and ceiling penetration seals and fire-resistant joints.
Several Hensel products also fulfil the requirements in the 10/2010 DIBt reports on “Zulassungsgrundsätzen zur gesundheitlichen Bewertung von Bauprodukten in Innenräumen” (“Approval principles for the health-related evaluation of building products in indoor spaces”) in conjunction with the LCI values issued by the AgBB (Committee for the health-related evaluation of building products). They are thus recommended for use in public buildings that must comply with the assessment criteria contained in “Nachhaltiges Bauen für Bundesgebäude” (Guidelines for sustainable building) issued by the German Federal Ministry of Transport, Building, and Urban Development. These non-VOC products meet the criteria of the US LEED credit EQ c4.2. Their emission certificates in accordance with ISO 16000 and the AgBB evaluation scheme earn architects and planners so-called ‘credit points’ for the assessment of the environmental standards of a building according to BREEAM and for the award of the German Sustainable Building Certificate (DGNB). Under the French system of emission certificates, these products were classified as emission class A+ (very low emission).
Rudolf Hensel GmbH has been certified to ISO 9001:2008 since 1997, operates on an international level and commends itself by its level of flexibility in realising individual customer requests.
Over 95 years of creativity, high quality standards and intensive interaction with its customers have made Rudolf Hensel GmbH one of the leading manufacturers of fire protection systems for passive structural fire protection made in Germany.
